Imperialism in France and Africa

By Amin Sheikh, Sean Bohan, Nick Esposito, and Collin Fishman
Imperialism- is the domination by one country of the political , economic, or cultural life of another country or region.

Algeria- Louis Phillipe and the french invaded Algeria in the 1830's. The french first had control of Algerian soil when they were trying to regain their authority in the Mediterranean. By 1914 the French had taken over 10,000,000 squared km of land and about 60 million people in their army. France disgraced Africa. They took the Suez Canal from Egypt. To France this was something to celebrate, but to Africa this was something they wanted to forget. Sudan also faced some of these struggles. France wanted to conquer Sudan and use it against Egypt to threaten them. France also wanted control of the Nile River. This was a very aggressive form of imperialism. This gave France a whole bunch of privileges and advantages, and left most of Africa suffering.

When France moved into West Africa in 1850 for natural resources, Britain and Germany came in and seized lands to stop France from further expansions. Countries moved into Africa Mostly for trade, natural resources, and use of the ports for ships to use as trading routes.
By World War 1, France took over 3,250,000 square miles in Africa which was 14 times of France. France rule 30,000,000 Africans which was 75% of the french population. That is a lot, and that is cruel.

The forms of imperial rule are Colonies, protectorates, and Sphere of Influence.
Colonies: The leading imperial powers, France and Britain developed different types of colonial rule. The French practiced Direct Rule, which sent soldiers from France to administrate their colonies. The British use indirect rule. they sent chiefs and sultans.
Protectorates: local rulers were left as is, but were expected to follow the European advisers.
Sphere of Influence: A third form of western control was the sphere of Influence, an area in which an outside power claimed exclusive investment or trading privileges.

I believe that the end results of imperialism was that the African culture grew more efficiently. if the french had not taken over, i think that Africa would still live in small little villages. I think if France did not come in there wouldn't be many cultures there. the French taught the Africans French culture. It effects Africa in Present day because Africa has different languages and different cultures.

Some obstacles to control was that other countries should not have used the Africans as slaves. They should have employed them instead of forcing them to do manual labor. how is this an obstacle to imperial rule
