Imparialism in Great Britain and the Far East

Imperialism in the Far East started when Britain tryed to establish direct trade with Asia. They wanted to trade spices, tea, sliver, silk, and opium. The British set up small, indirect controlled clonies.
There was a strong demand for oriental goods from Asia all over Europe. Britain had a strong hold on India, and was trading through the Suez canal and making a lot of money off of it. Britain realized they could make even more money by selling Indian opium, a narcotic drug used from opium poppy, in the Chinese market. This would make Britain's most profitable crop, opium. Also, people paid the British opium traders for the opium in pure silver. Soon the people became addicted to opium and it was pouring into the Asian market. Concered by the fact that most of the country was becoming so addicted to it, the Chinese government took a stand against the British. They destoyed the opium in one of the ports, starting the Opium War. Britain took control of Hong Kong, one many of the many Unequal Treaties that took place.

  • Opium is a drug, it is the dried latex obtained from opium poppy and if used frequently will become addictive
  • France became Britains main rival during imperialism.
